Verna Anderson Mertz, 90, of Morgan died Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan. A Mass celebrating Verna’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 from St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Morgan with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 2, 2012, from 4 until 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 4 p.m., all at the church. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, also at the church, for one hour prior to services.
Verna requested that any memorials be directed to St. Michael’s School, the Morgan Public Library or Redwood County Hospice.

Verna Leona Anderson Mertz, the daughter of Ben and Theresia (Wimmer) Kerkhoff, was born August 19, 1921 in rural Morgan. She attended schools in Morgan and at the Minnesota School of Business in St. Paul. Verna was employed at Montgomery Ward in St. Paul and Stockyards National Bank of South St. Paul.
On August 20, 1946, Verna married Lewis O. Anderson. They resided in Minneapolis before moving back to Morgan in 1954. Verna was employed at Control Data/MPI/Zytec in Redwood Falls for 20 years. Lewis passed away March 24, 1977. On September 2, 1989, Verna married Howard Mertz. They lived in Olivia until Howard’s death on September 1, 1994, after which Verna moved back to Morgan.
Verna was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and served as Lector for 20 years. She was a member of St. Michael’s CCW, VFW Auxiliary, Gil-Mor Auxiliary, New Horizons, Harmony Homemakers, Mission Sewing, and two bridge clubs. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, playing cards, gardening, and hosting family dinners.
She is survived by her children Linda (Don) Borgen of Elko, Bob Anderson of Terrill, Iowa, Craig (Linda) Anderson of Courtland, Doug (Dee) Anderson of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Mike Anderson, Sue (Scott) Heuchert, and Mark Anderson all of Morgan, and Beth Piepenburg of Willmar. Also surviving are her step-children Sharon (Leon) Mertz-Hendrickson of Rosemont, and Randy (June) Mertz of Olivia; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and brothers and in-laws Ray and Lorraine Kerkhoff, Glenn and Arlene Kerkhoff, Mary Ann Kerkhoff, and Phil Wenner all of Morgan, and Frances Kerkhoff of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Lewis Anderson and Howard Mertz; infant son Gregory; brothers Bernard, Harold, Dalbert, and Herb; sisters Lucille Eischen, Sally Anderson, Eileen Brown, and Delores Wenner; brothers-in-law Melvin Anderson, Orville Brown, and Bernard Eischen; sisters-in-law Evie Kerkhoff, and Monica Kerkhoff; daughter-in-law Percy Anderson; and son-in-law Don Piepenburg.
