Lola Mildred Dahmes received her heavenly reward on Sunday, December 21, 2025. She was born on April 19, 1938, to Edward and Mildred Schiller on the family farm in Sundown Township in Redwood County. She was the sixth child of 17. She and some of her siblings often worked at the corn plant in Sleepy Eye to earn money to buy Christmas gifts. She attended country school in District #27 and graduated from Springfield High School in 1954. She was united in marriage to Arvin Dahmes on September 9, 1956. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage until Arvin’s death in 2016. They made their first home in an upstairs apartment on the Dahmes home farm. Three years later they moved to a farmsite northeast of Clements, and in 1969, they moved to their home west of Morgan.
For a short time, Lola worked at the Springfield downtown bakery. After that, Lola became known for her delicious bakkens (donutlike pastries), cookies, and cakes. In addition to baking, Lola was an excellent seamstress who made most of her children’s clothes, including her daughter’s wedding dress and the bridesmaid dresses. She also made her son, Tim’s, leisure suit for his high school graduation. Lola was always impeccably dressed, and her hair, make-up, and nails were perfectly groomed. Lola loved family gatherings including her sisters’ parties. Lola, with her spunk and great sense of humor, was usually the “life of the party.”
Lola was a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church where she often worked as a janitor. She also cleaned homes in Redwood Falls for several decades. Lola loved the Lord, and she lived out her faith by being friendly, kind, and helpful. She was a “people” person who was genuinely interested in other people and their lives. She belonged to the Sunshine Club. Lola and Arvin enjoyed riding motorcycle, and they took several trips to the Dakotas and Colorado traveling 3,000 miles on one particular trip. One of Lola’s favorite places to visit was Branson, Missouri, where she and Arvin went on their 50th wedding anniversary.
Lola is survived by her children; Tim (Patricia) Dahmes of Chaska, Tamera (Jay) Baune of Redwood Falls, Todd Dahmes (special friend Susie) of Morgan, Troy Dahmes (special friend Michelle) of Morgan, and Trevor (Emily) Dahmes of Morgan. Also surviving are her grandchildren; Alicia (Mike) Lesher, Derek Clements, Tawny Hoeger-Lerdal, Travis (Jill) Baune, Tyler (Callie) Baune, Tanner (Micah) Baune, Sadie Dahmes, Derek Dahmes, Dylan (Lauren) Dahmes, Shelby Dahmes, Trey Dahmes, Taylor Dahmes, and Thomas Dahmes. Further surviving are her great-grandchildren; Jonathan, Sophia, Olivia, and Benjamin Clements, August and Ellis Hoeger-Lerdal, Aubrey Lesher, Odin and Lennox Kramer, Benjamin and Brett Baune, Conner, Kipton, and Cleo Baune, Vincent and Reid Baune, Reese, Travet, Mason, and Bridger, Emmarica, Zora, and Layton; siblings; Don (Margaret) Schiller, Joan Springborg, Janice Kettner, Lorene Elg, Darvin (Ardis) Schiller, Elizabeth (Lloyd) Jacobson, Jolene Krueger, and Dan (Vicki) Schiller; and in-laws Rodney Leopold, Jim Schmidt, Jean Schiller, and Doris Dahmes.
Lola was preceded in death by her husband, Arvin; parents, Edward and Mildred Schiller; siblings, Roberta Johnson, LouAnn Leopold, Eileen Raddatz, David Schiller, Doug Schiller, Kay Schmidt, Dennis Schiller, and Charles Schiller; and many other dear brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, and nephews whom she loved dearly. Lola will be remembered for her hard work, kind heart, unwavering faith, and love for her family and friends.
May she rest in peace.
