Born on November 19, 1955, Kim grew up in Worthington, MN, where he graduated in 1974. He studied art for three years at Mankato State University before shifting to electronics, earning his technician degree from Mankato Technical College, leading to his position with Sperry and Engineering Unlimited in Minneapolis.

In 1988, Kim moved to Redwood Falls, MN, where he joined Zytec Corporation as an electronic technician. There he met Nancy Sawatzky, and together, they built a life filled with love and shared experiences.

Their journey took them to Broomfield, Colorado, where Kim worked as a Process Technician. The couple married on July 27, 1996, and Kim embraced his role as a loving stepfather to Nancy’s three children—Jamie, Corey, and Angela—whom he loved very much.

In June 1997, Kim and Nancy moved to Tigard, OR, where he worked at Mitron in customer support before joining Xerox as a Process Technician until 2007. After 24 years in Tigard, they returned to Redwood Falls in 2021.

Kim was a laid-back soul who enjoyed life to the fullest. He had a passion for organizing social events, collecting unique items, and exploring World War II history—inspired by his father’s service. He also found joy in photography, gardening, movies, and music. His beloved miniature dachshunds, Bella and Emma, were his constant companions until their passing last fall.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Nancy; his sister, Sue Bucholz; his stepchildren, Corey (Sarah) Sawatzky and their three children; Angela (Steve) Jacobson and their four children, and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his nephew, Nicholas (Mindy) Bucholz; his niece, Courtney Bucholz; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Kim was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Kathryn (Refsland) Steen; brother-in-law Paul Bucholz; stepdaughter Jamie Sawatzky; and nephew Dustin Schultz.

Kim’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
