James "Jim" Louis Ahrens

James “Jim” Ahrens, 63, of Morton died Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at the Redwood Area Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2013 from the Nelson-Martin Funeral Chapel in Redwood Falls. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Morton. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.

James Louis Ahrens, the son of Earnie and Beatrice “Butch” (Reynolds) Ahrens, Sr., was born September 12, 1950 in Redwood Falls. Jim lived in Morton his entire life. He graduated from Morton High School in 1968 and shortly thereafter was inducted into the United States Navy. Jim served aboard the USS Mauna Kea during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1972 and returned home to Morton.

On May 19, 1973, Jim married Audrey Kodet at St. John’s Catholic Church in Morton and the couple made their home in Morton. Jim was employed as a carpenter with Morton Buildings for 22 years. In 1990, he began working as the surveillance lead operator at Jackpot Junction Casino Hotel where he was employed until retiring in 2010.

Jim was a member of the Methodist church, the V.F.W., and was a former volunteer firefighter. He loved being with his grandchildren and family. Jim took pride in his yard; he enjoyed gardening, lawn work, and cutting wood with his family. He loved watching and feeding the birds. Jim enjoyed deer hunting and fishing with his boys, playing cards, and Wii bowling. He was proud to have served his country in the Navy.

Jim is survived by his wife Audrey of Morton; children Al (Mandi) Ahrens of Morton, Amy (Kevin) Joyce of Morgan, and Marcus (Cindy) Ahrens of Morgan; grandchildren Emily, Jesse, Baylee, Skylar, Jayden, and Kyson; and siblings Earnie (Loni) Ahrens, Jr. of Morton, Tom (Maggie) Ahrens of Morton, and Pat Ahrens of Olivia. He was preceded in death by his parents.
