Helen Vivien Sander, the daughter of Art and Elna B. (Schoer) Pequin, was born December 8, 1927 in Redwood Falls. She spent her childhood in several Redwood County communities.
On February 28, 1948, Helen married Orvin Alden Sander at the Lutheran parsonage in Vesta and the couple settled in Belview where they operated Orvin’s Recreation. In 1954, they relocated to Redwood Falls and operated Sander Construction. Helen was a homemaker, although she also did seasonal work at DeKalb for a few years. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Ladies’ Guild. Helen also belonged to the VFW Auxiliary.
Our mom and grandma loved caring for her family and home. She always had freshly baked cookies and other treats for the daily lunch boxes she packed for her husband and sons. Helen and Orvin spent many years going to the lake where Orvin spent hours fishing and Grandma fried the fish to perfection. She enjoyed going to garage sales and playing cards. Helen loved her flowers and enjoyed gardening, embroidery, and collecting owls and angels.
Helen is survived by her children Junette Grannes of Olivia, Judy Lopez of Northglenn, Colorado, and Richard (Sandy) Sander, James (Kari) Sander, and Randy (Denise) Sander all of Redwood Falls. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her brothers Eugene (Janet) Pequin of Marshall and Roy Pequin of Vesta; and sisters Corrine Mohrman of Monticello, and Carolyn (Don) Christensen, and Diane (Alan) Berg all of Redwood Falls. She was preceded in death by her husband Orvin; her grandson Jesse Sander; her great-grandson Whyatt James Sander; her sons-in-law Curt Jansen, Larry Ryan, and John Lopez; and her three brothers.
Blessed be her memory.
