Glenn Bernard “Blondie” Blomeke was born in Morgan on July 1, 1930 to Bernard and Esther (Drusch)Blomeke. He graduated in 1949. He was the second of five generations of Blomeke Construction. Blondie appreciated a back road drive, finding comfort in the countryside. It grounded him. He felt connected to that dirt. He moved a lot of it—bulldozing, trenching, or laying miles of cement drainage tile with a shovel.
Blondie loved his country and his Marine stories. The guys quietly planned their holiday trip home from Camp Pendleton, California. That trip was better not packed in like sardines. Loaded and in pouring rain, they soon encountered a hitchhiking serviceman. Assuming the fellow just needed to get to base, they picked him up. Well, the stranger was headed for Springfield! Only question left, “Would you like us to drop you at your front or back door?”
On April 25, 1955 he married Jeanette C. Uhlenkamp. They celebrated 67 anniversaries. Proud he’d always made it home for Christmas, he donned that crimson suit that fit his spirit perfectly. He never outgrew playing with trains. He camped Up North for Superior Fourths and as a Boy Scout Master (oh, that tent!). Later, their RV ventured from Mexico’s canyons, to Florida’s Keys, to Alaska’s arctic.
He loved family, chocolate, polkas, jokes. He never lost his sense of humor. We are so blessed his favorite word was “Thank You”. He died at Gil Mor Manor on September 29, 2025. We so appreciate his dedicated caregivers.
He is survived by five children. Brad (Suzy) Blomeke of Morgan, Barb Lauterbach of Charles City, IA, Bruce Blomeke of Morgan, Mary Beth (Jeff) Carlson of Minneapolis, Brenda (Paul) Zeug of Morgan. He was proud of his eight grandchildren, Justin, Niki, Anna, Jasmine, Ashley, Lance, Lauren, Matthew, and twelve great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Llyod LeRoy “Slivers” Blomeke, and son-in-law Brian Lauterbach.
Blessed be his memory.
