Burnis “Beany” Read, 92, of Redwood Falls died Friday, October 28, 2011 at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls with burial to follow in Crestlawn Gardens, rural Redwood Falls. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday for one hour prior to services.

Burnis Martha Read, the daughter of Herman H. and Anna Bertha (Menk) Steinhaus, was born October 27, 1919 in New Ulm. She grew up at Gilfillan and received her formal education at the nearby country school.
On November 18, 1939, Burnis married Walter Wardell Read at the Lutheran parsonage in Morgan. The couple lived in Redwood Falls, then Watertown, South Dakota for a short time. The Reads then returned to Redwood Falls where they raised their family. Burnis was employed in the laundry at the Redwood Falls Hospital, at the Deluxe Café, and as a cook at the Lincoln school building in Redwood Falls. She also candled eggs at Melges Produce and worked at the Jolly Mill Café. After she and Walter retired in 1981, they moved to New London where they had a trailer on Long Lake. Burnis became a resident at Wood Dale Nursing Home in January 2008.
Burnis was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and card club. She enjoyed playing Whist, fishing, gardening, volunteering, and spending time with her family and friends..
Burnis is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Arlyce and Roy Lueck of New Ulm; son and daughter-in-law Ervin “Butch” and Rita Read of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters Dolores Radel of Willmar and Lorraine Schneider of Denver, Colorado; her brother-in-law Charles Ulrich of Redwood Falls; and many nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Walter in 1984; brothers Wendell Steinhaus and Vernon Steinhaus; and sisters Helen Steinhaus, Iona Taron, Elvira Hilbert, and Ruth Ulrich.
