Juen V. Starken, 90, of Redwood Falls and formerly of rural Wabasso died Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center in Redwood Falls. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Vesta with burial to follow in Crestlawn Gardens, rural Redwood Falls. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday for one hour prior to services.

Juen requested that memorials be directed to the diabetes and cancer care units of the Redwood Area Hospital.

Juen V. Starken, the daughter of Theodore and Ethel (Knable) Meilke, was born September 6, 1923 in Granite Rock Township, Redwood County. She grew up on the family farm near Lucan and received her formal education in Milroy Public School.

On November 1, 1941, Juen married Richard Muetzel and they made their home on the farm in rural Seaforth. The couple was blessed with a son, Kenneth. Richard died on December 9, 1974. On April 13, 1977, Juen married Harold Starken at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Seaforth.

Juen was employed at Woolworths in Redwood Falls for three years, then was a nurses aide at the Wabasso Nursing Home for eight years. She volunteered at Wabasso Senior Dining and at the clothing center in Redwood Falls. Juen also taught Sunday school at St. James Church and at the Sheridan church. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, traveling, visiting with friends and family, and helping others.

Juen is survived by her granddaughter Shannon Muetzel of Grantsville, Utah; great-granddaughter Yordanka Muetzel; sister Velora McClain of Parkers Prairie; several nieces and nephews; step-daughters Marjorie (Floyd) Kramer of Vesta, and Jeannie (Gene) Malecha of Redwood Falls; sisters-in-law Olga Muetzel and Lorraine Albrecht; 13 step-grandchildren; and 28 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands Richard and Harold; her son Kenneth; brothers Elgin and Leslie; sister Violet; step-daughter Theresa Mertens; and sisters-in-law Evelyn Zollner, Eileen Sueker, and Elvera Harnack.
