Mildred Norma Christiansen Basballe, the daughter of Carl and Julia (Axland) Christiansen, was born October 9, 1918 at home in Morgan Township, Redwood County. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church, where she was a life-long member. Mildred grew up on the family farm in Morgan Township and received her elementary education in District 83 “Gilfillan School.” She attended Morgan Public School from the seventh grade on, and graduated there as co-salutatorian on May 29, 1935. Mildred attended teachers’ training in Redwood Falls and received her certificate of graduation on May 29, 1936. For the next four years, Mildred taught in Districts 73 and 83 one-room rural schools.

On January 10, 1941, Mildred married Knud Basballe at Bethany Lutheran Church. The couple lived on and farmed the Basballe farm in Three Lakes Township, Redwood County. Mildred was a homemaker and volunteered as a 4-H leader and later at the food shelf. She was a charter member of the Gil-Mor Manor Auxiliary, and was instrumental in bringing AFS exchange students to Morgan. Mildred was active in her church and served as Sunday school superintendent, release time teacher and Luther League leader. She was an advocate for the elderly. Mildred attended 20 Elderhostel programs and enjoyed traveling to Denmark to visit Knud’s family. She had an amazing curiosity and was a life-long teacher.

Everyone who came in contact with Mildred in her living and in her death marveled at her wisdom and her living example of faith in Jesus Christ, her Savior.

Mildred is survived by her children Knud (Jan) Basballe, Jr. of Morgan, Betty Basballe (Ed) Martin of Woodbury, Paul (Cheryl) Basballe of Lake City, and Carl (Janet) Basballe of St. Peter; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and her sister Myrtle Rose of Morgan. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979, and 10 siblings.

Blessed be her memory.
