Lois Eileen Madson Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Lois Eileen Madson, 84, of Redwood Falls died Monday, May 27, 2013 at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013 from Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls with burial to follow at Crestlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, May 31, 2013, from 4 until 7 p.m., at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and will continue on Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Redwood Falls. E-mail condolences may be sent via www.nelsonmartinfuneralservice.com. Lois Eileen Madson, the daughter of William and Ella P. (Tredway) Cowie, was born November 5, 1928 in Huron, South Dakota. She was baptized in First Baptist Church. Lois attended country schools and graduated from Huron High School in Huron. After graduation, she attended the local community college for comptometry. Lois was employed by Eilers Fur Store and the Bureau of Reclamation in Huron. On September 21, 1952 she married Orrin T. Madson at First Baptist Church in Huron. After their marriage, they moved to LaMoure, North Dakota and then to Morris, Minnesota following Orrin’s work with the Federal Land Bank. In 1960, they moved to Redwood Falls where they have resided since. Along with being a mother to three children, Lois was very active in her community. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where she taught religious classes and was chairperson of the funeral committee where she took pride in the food served and honoring friends’ lives. She also volunteered with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she served as the membership chairperson. Lois also helped serve meals for American Legion functions. Everything she did, she did with all her heart and soul and took pride in making sure things were done right. From 1982 to 1984, Lois worked as a cook at the Redwood Area Hospital. She then took a position at the Redwood County Law Enforcement Center and worked there until her retirement in 2011, at age 82. Again, Lois showed her love and passion for cooking. Lois also had several hobbies for which she was well known. She thoroughly enjoyed cooking and it was always from scratch. She was always asking for good recipes and cutting out new recipes to try and was always willing to share those that were tried and true. Lois also enjoyed flower gardening and took special pride in her roses. Stitching was her other hobby which included both counted cross-stitch and Hardanger. She was meticulous and often won ribbons at the county fair for her needlework. Lois is survived by her husband Orrin T. Madson; their children Carolyn (Randy) Newman of New Ulm, Les Madson of Denver, Colorado, and Steve Madson of Oahu, Hawaii; grandchildren Michelle (Wayne) Owens of New Ulm, Mike (Rachael) of Champlin, Mark (Erica) Newman of New Ulm, and Ryan Madson of Phoenix, Arizona; great-grandchildren Olivia, Sydney, Hayden, Avery, Carter, Mea, Willow, and baby Newman due in August 2013; and a number of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews whom she also kept close to her heart and have remained very special to her. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Evelyn Bartells and Clara Frank: one half-sister and two half-brothers; and brothers-in-law Earl Bartells, and Clarence Frank.
