He received his elementary education at the local school and then worked on the family farm. Les was a truck driver for the lumber yard and, in his spare time, played drums with the family band.

Les and Doris were founding members of Christ Presbyterian Church in Edina. Les enjoyed traveling and family vacations – his family was even able to take a cruise together. He also liked to play golf and go fishing; he was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed westerns. Les and Doris wintered together in McAllen, Texas for 16 years before her death in 2005.

He is survived by his daughter Penny (Joseph) Schaefer of Albert Lea; daughter-in-law Judy Sowder of Bloomington; grandsons Kristofer (Randi) Ellsworth of Hartland, and Nathan Ellsworth of Eagan; granddaughters Abby Sowder of Bloomington, and Lindsey (Viktor) Kovalchuk of Bloomington; great-grandchildren Morgan Bjorkland, Rylee Bjorkland, Olivia Ellsworth, Jack Kovalchuk, and Finn Ellsworth.
