Leland Virgal Butenhoff, the son of Martin and Mabel (Rauschke) Butenhoff, was born July 7, 1925 in Emmett Township, Renville County, Minnesota. He was raised on the family farm and received his formal education at Emmett Township District 127 School. Lee was confirmed at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church where he was a lifetime member.

Lee was a farmer all of his working life. At the same time, he was also employed at various area businesses, including Rafters, Inc. in Olivia, Olivia Canning Company, Trojan Seed Company in Olivia, and Zenk Insulation in Danube. In his spare time, Lee was a drummer for many local bands, including “The Happy Rangers” and “Lee’s Concertina Band.” Lee collected hats – he had hundreds of them. He always had a big garden which he worked with his John Deere tractor. Lee enjoyed cutting wood and had piles of wood on the farm from cutting down old trees and splitting the wood. Lee also liked to fish and go to auctions.

On July 3, 1970, Lee married Marie Schmidt at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown, S.D. They lived on the family farm until moving to Redwood Falls in 1999. They resided in Hutchinson for a short time and then became residents at Wood Dale Home.

Lee is survived by his step-children Myron “Mike” Schmidt of Redwood Falls, and Karen (Larry) Hoff of Hutchinson; step-grandchildren; and step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marie in November 2012; brother Delmar Butenhoff; stepdaughter Deloria Bell; and stepson Stanley Schmidt.

Blessed be his memory.
