L.J. "Bean" Bernardy

L.J. “Bean” Bernardy, 83, of Wabasso died Monday, January 15, 2018 at Wood Dale Home in Redwood Falls. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 from St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Wabasso. Inurnment, with military honors, will be held at a later date at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Seaforth. Visitation will be held Friday, from noon until 2 p.m., at St. Anne’s Catholic Church.

The family prefers memorials be directed to Wood Dale Home or Garnette Garden’s Memory Care unit.

L.J. “Bean” Bernardy, the son of Henry and Eva (Rittenour) Bernardy, was born February 16, 1934 in Seaforth. He grew up in Seaforth and received his formal education in Seaforth and Wabasso schools. Bean was inducted into the United States Army in 1953 and served in the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1956.

On June 28, 1955, Bean married Lenore “Norie” Bergstrom in Wabasso and they lived in Colorado Springs Colorado, Wabasso, and recently Redwood Falls. Bean was a self-employed barber for over 50 years. He also drove school bus and umpired ball games. Bean was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church where he served as head usher and volunteered in many capacities. He was a member of the American Legion and Lions Club, and served on the city council. In his spare time Bean enjoyed playing horseshoes, umpiring, bowling, coaching softball, playing cards, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Norie; children Cynthia (Bill) Lavin, Alfred (Cyndi) Bernardy, Dennis (Cori) Bernardy, Mary (Eddy) Johnson, Linda (David) Weldy, Teena (Travis) Janshen, Patricia Mulder, and Joleen (Robert) Hyde; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Florence “Flo” Szczeniak and Lucille Terchia both of Willmar; and brother David Bernardy of Tucson, Arizona. Bean was preceded in death by seven brothers and four sisters.
