Jerome "Jerry" Peter Malecek Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Jerome “Jerry” Malecek, 84, of Morgan died Monday, January 19, 2015 at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2015 from St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Morgan. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 25, 2015, from 4 until 7 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, all at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Morgan. Visitation will continue on Monday at the church for one hour prior to services. Arrangements are with Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Morgan. E-mail condolences may be sent via www.nelsonmartinfuneralservice.com. Jerome Peter Malecek, the son of John and Mary (Serbus) Malecek, was born September 11, 1930 in Bechyn, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm near Bechyn and received his formal education in Henryville Township country school. Jerry enlisted in the United States Army on December 27, 1950 and served as a mechanic with the 175th Battalion at Camp Rucker. On April 28, 1951, Jerry married Opal Scharfencamp at Camp Rucker, Alabama. Following Jerry’s honorable discharge on May 14, 1952, they returned to Minnesota and farmed south of Morgan. Jerry farmed for 15 years. After the Malecek’s moved into Morgan in the fall of 1969, Jerry began his 25-year employment with Harvestland Cooperative. Jerry and Opal were also involved in the bulk fuel business until their retirement. In 1970, Jerry began driving bus for Morgan schools. He drove school bus for Rick Thielen at Thielen Bus Lines and for Bennett Bus Service for 43 years, until his retirement in 2010. Jerry loved driving school bus and the kids on his route. He was a devout member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Morgan where he served as a Eucharistic minister and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He was a volunteer bus driver for the Catholic school and various events. Jerry was a life-member of the American Legion. He loved being a farmer, milking cows and being able to raise his kids on the farm. After retiring he enjoyed working at Mark’s farm. Jerry loved to go fishing, hunting, trapping and camping. He and Opal enjoyed traveling to South Dakota with their grandchildren and taking trips to visit Steve’s family in Texas. Jerry enjoyed picnics at the lake, the annual summer picnic at Ramsey Park, and camping at Sibley State Park. He liked to have company and, when someone wasn’t there in person, enjoyed talking on his cell phone to family and friends. Jerry loved attending the Czech Festival in Bechyn with family who came from a distance. Jerry is survived by his children Steven (Roxane) Malecek of Plano, Texas, Susan (Michael) Haubrich of Danube, Maxine (John) Olson of Willmar, and Mark (Roxy) Malecek of Redwood Falls; grandchildren Amy Smith, Angela Hoppe, Matthew Haubrich, Alyssa Toft, Julie Crowell, Amanda Frank, Gregory Haubrich, Daniel Haubrich, Rachel Malecek, Abby Gronli, and Ahnna Malecek; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother John Malecek of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal, on April 13, 2014; one brother; and four sisters. Blessed be his memory.
