Eileen Grace Sommers

Eileen Sommers, 94, of Redwood Falls died Sunday, March 18, 2012 in Aurora, Illinois, while visiting her daughter, Kay and husband Jack. Visitation will be held Friday, April 13, 2012, from 4 until 8 p.m., at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls. A private burial will be held on Saturday, April 14 at the Redwood Falls Cemetery.

Eileen Grace Sommers, the daughter of Anna and Willis Carruth, was born December 14, 1917 in Beaver Falls Township, near Morton in Renville County. She grew up in Morton and received her education in Morton Public School.

On October 23, 1940, Eileen married Lyndon James Sommers at the Middle Creek EUB (Evangelical United Brethren) Church. The couple moved to a farm south of Danube where, together, they farmed and milked cows. Lyndon retired, due to health problems, in 1974 and passed away on March 4, 1978. Eileen moved into Redwood Falls in June 1978. She became a resident of Wood Dale Nursing Home in July 2009.

In December 2011, Eileen traveled to Illinois to visit with her daughter, Kay and husband Jack. Eileen became ill on March 9 and passed away in Aurora on March 18.

She loved to work in her flower garden. Eileen also loved to cook, bake, read, do crossword puzzles, ceramics, and needlepoint.

She is survived by her children Kay (Jack) Bartley of North Aurora, Illinois, Roger (Clara) Sommers of Yuma, Arizona, Jane (John) Gray of New Ulm, Dean (Diane) Sommers, and Mark Sommers all of Cottonwood, Arizona; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; former daughters-in-law Linda Sommers and Pat Gustafson both of Redwood Falls; her brother George Carruth of Redwood Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lyndon; and her son Myron. Also preceding her in death were her siblings and their spouses – Bess (Claude) Smith, Bill Carruth, Myrtle (Hank) Chroup, Evelyn (Fred) Haas, Harry (Corrine) Carruth, Chuck (Genny) Carruth, Nellie (George) Fullerton, Marian (Ed) Swoboda, Lillian “Snooks” (Andy) Ruhland, Mike (Jean) Carruth, and Doris (Bob) Harold; sister-in-law Loretta (Mrs. George) Carruth; and nieces and nephews.
